Of all the authors and illustrators featured at our annual Family Reading Night event, none has a more special relationship with our community than Marla Frazee. She was the first author our organizers brought to town to help children make the connection that books are written and illustrated by real people.
We kicked off the Summer Reading Program on Friday, May 31, with the help of our friends at the Washington Public Library and Neighborhood Reads and a generous donation from the Friends of the Library. Beginning February 1, the Community Literacy Foundation will host “Quilted with Love,” a month-long online baby quilt auction. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Foundation’s Rooted in Reading project.
When local marathon runner Rachael Leslie stands up to speak to the crowd at our Run to Read 5K Run/Walk this Saturday, Oct. 14, it will bring her running experience full circle. She credits running the Run to Read 5K about 10 years ago with awakening the competitiveness that has led her to complete more than 20 marathons, including the Chicago marathon this past Sunday and, next month, the New York City Marathon.
Even if you’re not a runner, just reading Leslie Kimmelman’s new book, “Ready, Set, Run! The Amazing New York City Marathon,” is enough to make you want to plan a trip to the Big Apple to cheer on the some-50,000 people from around the world who step forward every year to complete the 26.2-mile route through NYC’s five boroughs.
Jackson and “The Rhino Suit” will be the featured author and book at this year’s Family Reading Night Friday, March 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Washington Middle School. The free event is sponsored by the Community Literacy Foundation in partnership with the School District of Washington and the Washington Optimist Club.
Yes, summer is a time for kids to run wild. Let them sleep late, catch fireflies, and spit watermelon seeds in the yard. But keep them away from the Summer Slide. Tips for doing just that are offered in the posting.

It’s official. We are the Best-Read Community in America. The Community Literacy Foundation’s One More Page project crossed its “1 million pages read” goal line back in mid-August, and as of December 31, the count stood at more than 1,543,148 pages read.
